Gothic Art

World of Art

The splendor of Gothic art is embodied in the magnificent cathedrals of Notre Dame, Chartres, Rouen, and Lincoln, among others, and in the sculpture with which these buildings were adorned. But during the years between 1140 and 1400 a vast quantity of very fine paintings, stained glass, manuscript illuminations, metalwork and tapestries were also produced. Andrew Martindale, a noted art historian, writes of all these great achievements with perception and knowledge in one of the best available surveys of this most creative period in Western art. 206 illus., 32 in color.
