Once learned, these terms enable the student to communicate with other professionals in the area and to comprehend technical publications. Like other areas of biology and of science in general, mycology has an extensive terminology that has developed over many decades. The beginning student of mycology is introduced to the most important of these terms in introductory courses and textbooks, but as he/she progresses to advanced studies, new and unfarniliar terms are encountered, especially in the literature. It is at this point that recourse to a mycological dictionary is necessary. The /llustrated Dictionary of Mycology is designed to provide mycology students at alllevels with a complete, up-to-date reference they may consult. It contains over 3,800 terms for which definitions are given, along with the etymological derivations of these terms. The terms are illustrated with 774 black and white photographs and 548 drawings. In addition, one or more species of fungi to which a particular term applies is included with the definition. Although most of the entries are strictly mycological in nature, a number of terms of broader biological usage that are frequently encountered in the mycologicalliterature are included for convenience.
