The Outhouse Revisited
Don Harron
Everyone recognizes the location and shape of the outhouse. The traditional look, weatherbeaten planks, sloping roof, crescent moon cut out of the flapping door, brings up a nostalgic smile to anyone who grew up in the country. Age and gravity have taken their toll on the outhouses of North America. Here and there outhouses have been treasured, preserved and used. In the age of the plastic flamingo, tanning salons and "lite" beer there is something very sturdy, basic and reassuring about the home-made structure. It endures. The Outhouse Revisited presents a fine collection of these useful little buildings. The best days of some are long past; others are obviously the objects of loving attention and preservation. All have this in common: when you really want to find one, there is no sight more welcome.
