The Presence of God in the World
A Contribution to Postmodern Christology Based on the Theologies of Paul Tillich and Karl Rahner (Europaische Hochschulschriften/European University Studies/Publications Universitaires Europeennes Reihe 23: Theologie/Seri
Steven G. Ogden
The book addresses the problem of the presence of God in the world. Its thesis is that the presence of God can be affirmed, if presence is understood in relation to absence. Furthermore, the experience of God in the world is ambiguous and consists of presence and absence. The idea of interpreting experience in this way is not new, but the application of this perspective to the theologies of Tillich and Rahner provides new insights. However, their theologies were oriented toward modernity. This book makes a contribution to post-modern Christology. The ambiguity, which is "implicit" in Tillich and Rahner, is made "explicit" and interpreted in postmetaphysical terms; this involves developing a theology of presence and applying it to the Incarnation and the Death-Resurrection event. This theological study draws on interrelated strategies of philosophical reasoning, historiography, conceptual critique and comparative analysis.
