Chief Inspector Wexford is now retired and living with his wife both in Kingsmarkham and in a coachhhouse owned by their daughter in Hamstead, London. A chance encounter with Tom Ede, a Detective Superintendent with the London police, draws Wexford out of retirement and into a very difficult and dangerous investigation.
